Have you ever read a Lora Leigh Book? I've read a few now and if you're looking for a contemporary 'romance' - and I use that term loosely, read one - anyone - and you'll see what I mean - with a whole lot, and I do mean a whole lot of smut, then she is your author.
Now, y'all know me, I LOVE SMUT! I love a book that has a lot of shagging going on. Romantic shagging, foreplay, or just down and out fucking. It's all good in my book. And depending on the story and the characters, one love making scenario makes more of an impression then another.
Lora Leigh is a decent author. I've read maybe five of her books so far and the smut is good, sometimes damn good. The problem is that it is always the same. Every book I've read so far, the male characters are the same. They are all stud alpha-type dominant males, who talk and act, and make love the exact same way: vocal, dominate, demanding. All good things but it's the same thing in every book. And here's the kicker...they all love anal sex! Every book I've read so far, there is lots of anal sex. Again, not a bad thing - at all. But in every book! With every character! It's like you're reading different books but everything is the same so it's like your reading the same book. Even the plots and the scenarios don't differ that much from each other. She's also big on M/F/M threesomes, and works this angle in a lot of her books.
Being a lover of smut you would think that this would not bother me, but it does, because - I can't beleive I'm going to say this - but it's TOO much smut. I mean, the whole point of a romance is too build up the tension between the two characters until it explodes in the first encounter, and then it should keep building with every joining after that. You should have this feeling of excitement in your gut when you're reading, like you can't wait for their next love making scene. But in Lora Leigh's books it's all about the sex and not much else, and if there isn't anything else besides that, than how do you really 'feel' the characters? You can't, because there is no depth to them. You are never given a chance to get to know the character on a more intimate level because their sexuality - which can be amazingly good - is always at the forefront. Every girl needs a little romance. It shows the tender side of a man. A man can be alpha dominate yet you still want him to have that little side of him that can be tender and loving...romantic. These guys are not romantic, I'm even going to take a jump here and say they border on being bullies/thugs. I love take charge dominate male characters - who doesn't - but these guys really steal the show when it comes to that department. Again, not a bad thing, but you want more in a lead character especially in a romance. You want to fall in love with him as much as the heroine does, and sadly with Leigh's lead characters you can't. Honestly, I'd fuck anyone of them, any given time, but love them? No.
Well except maybe one.
There is always an exception, isn't there?
In all the Lora Leigh books I've read so far, there is one that stands out and has become my favorite of hers. Nauti Nights. This book is actually the second book in a series of soon to be three. What makes this one different? Not the smut, that's for sure *wink* that is definitely the same, but it's the characters themselves that are better and if the characters are better then the sex scenes are that much hotter. They have a history - another common plot in all her books - but it's written better, the characters pop to life more in this story. And their back story is deeper, more emotional. You actually have a chance to fall in love with these characters that she doesn't give you in the other books. There's talk of threesomes, but you know that this male character would never share the woman he loved with another man, which appeals to me.
I guess I'm analyzing these books because I'm developing my own original story and building the characters up to be individuals and not the same drones. When I read a story likes Leigh's I can see and feel as a reader myself, just how important that is. How much more engrossing the story and tale can be. It's like a reminder to me that there is more then just raw smut to a story. And that without solid characters to get to know and love, then smut is..well, just smut.
I'll wrap this review up by saying this. I do enjoy Lora Leigh's books. The smut, though redundant at times is pretty hot. And if you're looking for a light read with lots of dirty smut with a dominate male character then try one of Lora Leigh's books. If you're going to start with Nauti Nights - the second book described above - you can, you don't need to read Nauti Boy first because she sets up the background pretty much in every book. I read Nauti Nights first and I wasn't lost at all, and so far it's turned out to be my favorite.
Nauti Nights, by Lora Leigh
Happy reading!

Its me again. I have not read any of her books. However, in reading a ton of fanfic, I have noticed that some authors use the same sex scene in all their fics... not that its a bad scene but I mean almost exaclty you know that first they will kiss then he will drop to his knees and go down on her and then she will return the favor and then the big fianlly. Okay sorry rambling, but I have seen this on several authors. They will have 10 stories and its the same way, and the story line may be different but the build up to them getting to gather and then the lovemaking is always the same. So why should I read another one of their stories...I know what is going to happen!!!!
I want surprise and uniqueness in a story. Not that everything has to be that way...but build me up buttercup..please. LOL
Okay.. just thought I would give a bit of my thoughts on the subject without actually on this author since I havent read her.
Oh and I am gettin excited about reading your Original.... I just know that you will do a smashing job on it. Hurry Up!!! I am in need of something good to read. LOL Just Teasing... Works of Art take time I know.

Hey Terra,
It's hard to keep coming up with different sexual scenarios. I know I've often find myself wondering if my scenes are always the same, because sometimes they feel that way to me. So I can understand that. Still as a writer, I would think that a writer would at least try to be a bit more creative and original, after all isn't that what writing is all about. If it's the same thing it's just boring. But this author - Lora Leigh - doesn't even try to make it different. In fact, if the male characters didn't have a different name, I would think it was the same character in every book.
Seeing this in a PUBLISHED book almost disheartens me. I wonder how the hell did this author get published when I know that there are lots of talented authors out there that are trying to get published and are having such a hard time doing so. And these are creative and original writers that actually have a good story to tell.
It's mind-boggling, and I'm sad to hear that it is also happening in the fandom. I have to admit, I don't read much Fan Fiction anymore these days. I tend to critique them too much and then I end up not enjoying the story. So I've been sticking to reading regular books.
Thanks for the support with the original story - LOL I need to come up with a name for it - I started the prologue yesterday because when I was done writing the outline I was so excited to start the story that I had to write it. And I don't know if I can stop. So I'm thinking that Book Three if PITD - I'm ducking now - might be slightly held up *sheepish grin* I can't help it. I have just got to write this story. It's screaming to come out!
And I am nothing but a slave to my muse.
