I'm re-reading The Wolf and The Dove by Kathleen Woodiwiss. I haven't read this book in SO long yet it doesn't matter. The moment I pick it up and start reading it again, little by little everything comes back to me and I remember the story as if I just read it yesterday. Isn't that the way a good story should be?
This book and Shanna are two of the first Romance novels I ever read, oh so many years ago, and as I read it now I'm reminded that it was these two books that made me want to write. To create a story that just sucks you in and throws you into another world, another place and time, and make you feel like you were on this incredible journey through history.
Anyway, this book holds a very special place in my heart. There is just something about the characters of Wulfgar and Aislinn. Two strong, prideful people testing each other, slowly falling in love and realizing what the other means to them and all that they would do for the other. It's an amazing journey, that at times can be frustrating, when their pride becomes too much and gets in the way of them getting together like you want them too. But it doesn't matter because the struggle and the long haul to the final destination is all worth it. They appear stronger, their love more destined and forever.
It can at times be a bit slow in the reading. Kathleen Woodiwiss is tremendous with details she really puts you in the story. At the same time it can be a bit much and make the reading feel slow but nevertheless if you stay with it it's all worth it because in the end what you have is a masterpiece. A saga of true human emotions in a time of war between two struggling nations.
It's a long one too, over 700 pages, but if you're up for it - read it. If you enjoy a romance novel steeped in history, then this book will definitely fill the bill.
